Mt Fishtail Weekend
It's been 4 years since I last went up Mt Fishtail and for good reason. I remember it as an uphill suffer-fest to a tiny hut with cold winds and no views. This time I was hoping it would be a bit better - not only am I fitter, the forecast actually predicted good weather and someone had promised dark chocolate after dinner.
The walk up the valley to the start of the uphill is incredibly picturesque. Past the campsite the forest is largely untouched with huge podocarps and loads of orchids (at least 3 species!). Once across the stream the hard work begins - a couple of gentle switch backs and then straight up the ridge. After a couple of hours we made it to the treeline and our first view of the hut.
After settling in we headed up to the summit via the un-named saddle. Last time I visited the summit we were clouded in the whole time. This time the views were amazing! Pretty quickly after we solved the mystery of the painted rock the wind picked up and we hightailed it out of there. This time short cutting it straight down the scree slope to the hut.
Back at the hut we had a great evening of bourbon, dark chocolate and Lamb Risotto (finished off with a Blackcurrant Chia Pudding). In-between wind gusts the stars made an appearance too.
The next morning we had a relaxed breakfast before heading back down the track. All in all a fantastic weekend hike.
